Some days you just need a bite of comfort food. Maybe it’s cold and rainy, maybe you’ve had a rough day, or maybe you just had a big night before. Whatever the reason, it should be quick and easy to find what you crave.
Melt Room opened recently in Soho, and offers a range of soul-warming toasted sandwiches. The store itself has a very casual, diner feel (with a soundtrack so cheesy that it rivals the sandwiches!) and you can either eat in or just grab your order and go.
The cheese melts are served on Wapping bakery sourdough. You can choose from several different toppings or just go classic. I went for the pulled pork shoulder with mustard, ale and apple chutney, and cheddar (£7) but I think next time, I’ll just go for the classic special cheese blend (£4.50). Don’t get me wrong – the pork was delicious, but I think part of the charm of the grilled cheese is its simplicity – and with bread and cheese this good, you don’t need anything else.
Melt Room also does breakfast daily until 10.30am, and offers a range of soups, salads, and a nutella and mascarpone melt on milk bread (£3.50) if you want something sweet.
This is the perfect spot to grab a cheap and cheerful bite – I’ll definitely be back!
The good: The sourdough bread is amazing and toasted to perfection.
The bad: There are only 10 seats so choose your time carefully if you want to eat in.
The insider tip: Get yourself a side of crisp dill pickle (50p) to help cut through the cheese.
